<p>The National Science Foundation, often known as NSF, is an independent agency of the United States federal government that is drastically in charge of financing research and education activities in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering.</p>
<p>The work of the NSF will always be carefully guided by their overall agency mission, which is to "To promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense."</p>
<p>In line with this, the National Science Foundation has constituted the development of the Smart Health and Wellbeing (SHB) Program wherein they want to tackle scientific and technical issues that will pave the way towards the transformation of the healthcare process from being rather reactive and hospital centered into becoming preventive, proactive, evidence-based, patient-centered and focused on the wellbeing of the person instead of his/her disease.</p>
<p>The program tries to do this by addressing issues that are connected with sensor technology, networking, information and machine learning technology, system and process modeling, modeling cognitive process and lastly, social and economic issues.</p>
<p>In this regard, the main investigators who would like to participate in this program will have to include research studies that address the following concerns:</p>
<p>1) Digital Health Information Infrastructure - This dimension should include techniques and strategies that will most likely enable the interoperable, distributed, federated, and scalable digital infrastructure, languages, and tools for efficient integration and utilization of electronic health record information, as well as networked applications that can access such information.</p>
<p>2) From Data to Knowledge to Decisions - This dimension is supposed to address the creation of algorithms for the collection of multi-scale clinical, biomedical, contextual, and environmental data concerning every patient which would develop a window towards the establishment of decision support tools that could potentially optimize a patient-centered and evidence-based practice.</p>
<p>3) Empowering Individuals - This dimension will need to include strategies that could help determine socioeconomic and behavioral principles that would influence a patient's participation in healthcare and wellness activities.</p>
<p>4) Sensors, Devices and Robotics - This dimension will include investigative methods that will permit interoperable, temporally synchronized, medical prosthetic and embedded devices to continuously capture, store, and transmit physiological and environmental data.</p>
<p>The program will accommodate two kinds of project classes, the first one would the Exploratory Project, wherein they will award funds ranging from $200,000 to $600,000 with a project length of two to three years. The second project class would be the Integrative Project wherein the NSF will award funds in the amount of $600,000 to $2,000,000 with a project duration of four to five years.</p>
<p>Researchers and investigators will only be eligible to fill out an application for the Smart Health and Wellbeing Program if they are representing any of the following:</p>
<p>a) Universities and colleges including community colleges which campuses are situated in the United States of America.</p>
<p>b) Non-profit, non-academic organizations such as independent museums, observatories, research laboratories, professional societies and other organizations that are associated with research and educational activities.</p>

<p>The National Institutes of Health, often known as NIH, is an independent agency operating inside the United States Department of Health and Human services that's mainly responsible for pursuing many of the country's biomedical and health-related scientific studies.</p>
<p>The mission of the NIH has always been to "seek fundamental understanding of the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability."</p>
<p>In an attempt to contribute to the realization of this mission, the National Institutes of Health has developed the Shared Instrumentation Grant Program wherein they intend to solicit applications from NIH-supported research proposing to upgrade or purchase a single piece of expensive instrumentation (useful to the industry of science and technology) that at a minimum costs $100,000.</p>
<p>Initially, this program seeks to aid the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) Program. The project looks to provide funds to allow NIH-recognized institutions to purchase rather expensive research instruments that can only be justified on a shared-use basis and that are needed for NIH-supported projects in translational, basic, or clinical areas.</p>
<p>The types of research instruments that can be purchased under this program are nuclear magnetic resonance systems, electron and confocal microscopes, mass spectrometers, protein and DNA sequencers, biosensors, x-ray diffractometers and cell sorters.</p>
<p>In most cases, research studies lead to fascinating medical breakthroughs; and the National Institutes of Health intend to contribute to these discoveries by providing researchers and scientists with high-end and top of the line equipment that could potentially make their work more easier and effective.<span id="more-24"></span></p>
<p>The minimum cost of the instruments will be $100,000 each, and the maximum amount that will be granted per application will be $600,000.</p>
<p>The institutions and organizations which will be qualified to fill out an application under the Shared Instrumentation Grant Program are the following:</p>
<p>a) Public/State Controlled Institutions of Higher Education<br />
b) Private Institutions of Higher Education<br />
c) Hispanic-serving Institutions<br />
d) Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)<br />
e) Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs)<br />
f) Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions<br />
g) Nonprofit Organizations Apart From Institutions of Higher Education</p>
<p>The Department of Health and Human Services, the mother agency that is funding the Shared Instrumentation Grant Program, is the country's principal agency that is generally in charge of preserving the health of all Americans and ensuring the provision of fundamental health and human services to all people needing such services.</p>

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been used in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine for a wide variety of purposes. Western medicine has been studying the use of Turmeric, and its active ingredient and antioxidant, Curcumin, for its anti-inflammatory effects, arthritis, Alzheimer's, and uses in treating cancer. Let's look at some of the information that has been made available regarding Curcumin and cancer.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In his groundbreaking book, Anti-Cancer, David Servan-Schreiber writes that inflammation is a key ingredient in the formation of most disease, including cancer. Preventing inflammation is crucial to inhibiting the "terrain" that is conducive to the growth of cancerous cells. The concept of the body as "terrain" that can be either conducive or prohibitive to cancerous cells is a major component of Servan-Schreiber's book. (This book is truly unique, is highly recommended, and can function as a fantastic gift or conversation starter with loved ones who may not grasp the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.) To summarize very briefly, the body can be thought of as "terrain" that can be maintained to be unsuitable for cancers and other diseases through proper diet / exercise, reducing stress, and removing pollutants. The proper diet is especially crucial to creating the right "terrain."</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Curcumin has been shown to go beyond simply making the terrain in the body unsuitable for cancerous cells. The American Cancer Society states that, "Curcumin can kill cancer cells in laboratory dishes and also reduces growth of surviving cells. Curcumin also has been found to reduce development of several forms of cancer in laboratory animals and to shrink animal tumors":</p>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: justify;">According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, "Curcumin induces apoptosis (cell death) in human colon cancer, promyelocytic leukemia cells, and inhibits growth of uterine leiomyosarcoma cells. Curcumin also potentiated gemcitabine action in both in vitro and in vivo studies of pancreatic cancer. Oral administration is well tolerated, but bioavailability is relatively low. Following absorption, curcuminoids are rapidly metabolized. But a recent study in rats shows that bioavailability of curcumin can be increased when coadministered with piperine".</li>
<li> The importance of black pepper in Curcumin absorption is frequently overlooked by most people and health professionals alike.<span id="more-20"></span></li>
</ol>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It is well documented that the use of radiation and chemotherapy produces significant negative side effects. Curcumin is believed to cause minimal side effects although the true study of Curcumin's affects on cancers is still in its infancy. Obviously, any person who is currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation should speak with their physician regarding any use of Curcumin or other herbal treatments to ensure that there are no interactions with their existing treatment, but Curcumin is showing positive results in recent studies.</p>

Digestion has a direct impact on whether you gain, lose or maintain weight. It affects how you feel, including your energy levels. Have you ever had a "carbohydrate coma?" This is a silly way of saying that too many starchy carbohydrates can make you feel sleepy or lethargic, but it also causes some stoppage in your digestive tract. Having healthy digestion also affects how your body fights off colds, flu, and disease. If you are properly absorbing nutrients, it will also show by the radiance in your skin.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Healthy digestion allows food to be taken in by the body properly, which is beneficial to all of your cells and brain, improving overall functioning and feelings of wellbeing. If too much food or drink is consumed too quickly, indigestion and stomach problems can flair up. Eating too fast happens a lot when people are over worked, over stressed or over committed. All people inevitably eat on the run and at times experience indigestion, which may be compounded by overeating. Do you ever eat standing up because you are in a hurry? Give yourself time to sit down and relax when you eat a meal. Take time to be social during meals by spending time with others, and chew your food well.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Be sure you are not consuming empty carbohydrates full of sugar and white flour, but eat good complex carbohydrates and high water content foods, including raw vegetables which contain live enzymes. And, stay active. Fiber, water and exercise assist with proper food absorption and elimination, by moving food through your body, and keeping food from building-up and putrefying in your system. Fiber-poor diets can instead promote fat absorption and weight gain. When food is kept in the body longer than normal, intestinal yeast and fungus growth may result in feelings of malaise, illness and impaired immune system function.<span id="more-16"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">You may have a special sensitivity to spicy or high fat comfort foods, which for some people may interfere with healthy digestion. So, if this is the case, choose food types and drinks carefully. Other digestive irritants may include caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, nuts, carbonated beverages, smoking and certain medications.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When a cause for indigestion can't be found after a thorough evaluation, a person may have a malabsorption issue or some sort of functional dyspepsia, which is a type of indigestion created by an impairment in the stomach's ability to accept and digest food and then pass that food on to the small intestine. Personally, I am often plagued by indigestion due to Hereditary Pancreatitis, so i share this with you based on a lot of my own experience with digestion management, which sometimes, but not always, mitigates my own flare-ups and eases the recovery phase. I believe that practices of healthy digestion can be applied in many severe digestive diseases, such as gallstones, stomach ulcers and other medical conditions, which cause intense and prolonged symptoms requiring medical intervention. So, if you know you are eating right, but are still having problems, please do call your physician and get checked out.</p>

<p>First, you will want to do online research of facilities offering assistance in the field specific to an illness or injury. For example, many institutions offer great resources for patients with Alzheimer's, or who have suffered strokes. Often you can par your list down by research and reading reviews on each place. You should definitely visit each one and take a thorough tour. Here are some points of what to look for in a skilled nursing facility.</p>
<p>• Smell - Does it smell bad? It is understandable that maybe one room may have a bad odor, but if it is throughout the entire facility, cross it off your list.</p>
<p>• Talk to the residents - Do they look happy? Nothing can be more of a downer than being around people that are mopping around.</p>
<p>• Talk to the staff - Do they look like they are enjoying their job? Do they talk and interact with the residents?</p>

For the elderly, eating is a major part of life and also a social time, so this point is very important!</p>
<p>• Staff - You will want to know if there is sufficient staff twenty-four hours a day in order to handle problems that might arise. Do they have physical, occupational, speech and other therapists on staff to work with the residents on a regular schedule? How often do they have exercise programs with these therapists?<span id="more-10"></span></p>
<p>• Extra-curricular activities - Having additional planned activities such as movies, games, crafts, outings or parties help the residents not only get to know each other, but get them out of their rooms.</p>

<p>Hair lice are a disgusting problem. Usually children get infected by these parasites when they mingle and play with other children who might have them in their hair. If proper care is not given they multiply and once the number of lice in the head is more, it becomes more and more difficult to get rid of them.</p>
<p>Essential oils can repel hair lice. Hence the best way to get rid of hair lice is to rinse your hair with an infusion of essential oils after shampooing. Rosemary, lavender, tea tree oil etc can be used for this. For highly infested hair, it is better to saturate the hair with an essential oil over night before washing it off in the morning. This process has to be repeated for a few days to completely get rid of the lice.</p>
<p>A mix of egg yolk, vinegar and lemon juice applied on hair for 30 minutes before washing it off can be helpful in the treatment of lice. Lemon juice is beneficial in the treatment of lice and also dandruff. Make mix of equal quantities of lemon juice and garlic paste and apply it on scalp. Leave it till dry and wash off in cold water. Vinegar is also effective in removing head lice and so vinegar can also be added to this mixture. Olive oil can be used as an essential oil. Saturate the hair with olive oil and leave it overnight to be washed off in the morning. This has to be repeated every few days till all the lice is completely removed.</p>
<p>Almonds can also be used for removing hair lice. Soak a few almonds overnight and make a paste of it. Mix a few drops of lemon juice to it and apply it on scalp and leave it till dry. Wash it off with cold water. Neem leaves have properties that can kill and repel lice. A paste of neem leaves applied on the scalp for a while before washing off can be effective in the treatment of lice. Basil is another useful herb in the treatment of lice. Make a paste of few basil leaves and apply it on scalp to be washed off when dry. The smell of basil can repel lice.</p>
<p>A mixture of mayonnaise and apple cider vinegar applied on the scalp for a while and washed off can also be effective in the removal of lice. Mayonnaise alone is also good enough. Rub a mixture of lemon and butter on your head to keep the lice away. Onion juice can be rubbed over the entire scalp and left for a while before washing it off. This is effective in killing the lice. Grind custard apple along with its seeds and apply the paste on head. Cover the head with a shower cap and leave it overnight. Wash it off in the morning with shampoo.<span id="more-6"></span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">The holiday season means more parties, more shopping, more eating, more stress, and, of course, more colds and flu! So how can you stay healthy during this busy time?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There are several things that you can do to practice self-care. The holidays are not an invitation to lose focus on what is most important in your life. Here is a short list to keep you focused on maintaining your health - and still have fun!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>1) WASH YOUR HANDS!</strong>This is the one, best thing you can do regularly to avoid getting sick. Use a disinfectant gel. This is the simplest and easiest way to keep germs away.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>2) Get a flu shot.</strong>Stop into any pharmacy today and get yours. No excuses. If you are around people, you are susceptible. If you have kids, that doubles your chances of getting sick. Prevention is the best medicine.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>3) Take your vitamins.</strong>If you take vitamin C and E and a multi, that is great. If you eat healthy fruits and vegetables, you may choose not to take vitamins, however, in the winter months, adding extra C to your diet can be helpful.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>4) Don't overeat. </strong>Gaining weight over the holidays does not have to be the norm. It is not healthy for your body to yo-yo in weight. It adds extra effort to your heart and other vital organs. Overeating feels bad. Your clothes tighten and that causes stress. You worry about the gain and how you'll get it off then in January you are stressed about losing it. It's a horrible thing to do to your body. Eat modestly. Eat slowly. Be conscious. Don't just pick; use a plate and choose your food wisely. Enjoy yourself, just be sensible about it.<span id="more-8"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>5) Drink plenty of fluids.</strong>Water is best. It keeps your body well hydrated to flush germs out of your system. Dehydration creates a fertile environment for sickness. And watch your level of alcohol intake. Sweet drinks can add hundreds of calories to your daily intake and cause your weight to fluctuate wildly. Alcohol also dulls your senses. Again, be sensible. And of course, don't drink and drive!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>6) Get proper rest. </strong>Sleep is underrated but it is SO important for good health, creativity and clear thinking. When you're tired, you are not as alert and more easily agitated. To keep stress at bay, make sure you are sleeping enough. Most people require 8 hours but some need more and some can go with a little less. This may mean saying 'no' so some of your invitations but you are the priority. If you're exhausted, it's easier to catch a cold. Your body will have rest, even if it has to force you to get some!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>7) Work with a budget.</strong>I mean, really, when I listen to the stories of what people spend and how they go out of their way to get every person that comes in contact with them, their kids or some member of their family some gift or tip, it makes my head swim! No one expects anything! If they receive something, they are thankful, but there is no reason to go into debt in order to 'look good'. Most of the time, the gifts are not needed anyway. Ask a teacher how many trinkets and broaches they have received over the years and I guarantee they will roll their eyes and laugh. Give from your heart as opposed to your checkbook and do what FEELS GOOD FOR YOU. Let the rest go. By being prudent with your heard-earned money, you respect yourself and experience less stress in the New Year when you look over your bills and find that you are not in loads of debt from overspending. You might even find that you have extra money to take that cruise you have always wanted.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong> <img src='http://www.newrcd.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif' alt='8)' class='wp-smiley' /> Think 'JOY' this holiday season.</strong>In other words, if it's a chore, if you are miserable doing something, then consider not doing it. Often, you put such pressure on yourself to be everything to everyone and to do everything perfectly. You are so concerned about being judged harshly when, in fact, it is you who judge yourself harshly. No one else cares nearly as much as you worry they do. If you are enjoying yourself, then go for it. But if it brings you unhappiness, makes you feel uncomfortable or stressed, then just don't do it. Focus on pleasing you and bringing yourself joy; that will be what pleases others.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>9) Find ways to de-stress. </strong>There are many ways you add stress to your life during the holidays. Therefore, it's essential to add little things that will help you to relax. Schedule some down time into your week. Get a manicure. Purchase food rather than cook it all yourself. Give yourself permission to not do everything. You can also say 'no' or delegate certain tasks to others. Remember, much of your stress comes from YOU! No one else expects so much of you. You are your own worst enemy! NOW is the time to be good to you. After all, the holidays are to be enjoyed. Create a wonderful holiday memory as opposed to a stressed-out one.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>10) Exercise in spite of the time crunch.</strong>If you think you have no time to work out, you are making it too hard. 15 minutes is all you need every day to get your body moving. Dance while listening to music or run in place. If you have a machine that you use as a clothes hanger, move the clothes and hop on while chatting with your spouse or watching TV. 'Time' is a lame excuse given the health benefits. A little time today will save you time later when your body starts to break down and give you pain because you do not have the muscle tone or strength needed to do your activities of daily living. Exercise offers you clarity of thought, increases your energy and boosts your metabolism. It strengthens your heart and helps aid digestion. It also helps you to unwind and de-stress. Exercise is not a nice-to-do; it really is a need-to-do all year round.</p>

<p>Some gents need oxygen, perhaps just because of old age. There is no worry, because everyone needs help sooner or later in life. While medicine is perfectly common, it often presents a challenge to daily life, especially when that medicine weighs over ten pounds and must travel with you. Anytime a person with oxygen decides to go anywhere, they have the trouble of taking their needs with them. This can be a single tank for short trips, or several tanks for a vacation. For anyone frequently on the road, they might need a bulky machine that converts water.</p>
<p>Traveling with portable oxygen might seem like a barrier to life, but it need not be. Like any other living assistant, such as a wheelchair or walker, it is simply a tool that helps you get around. It is foolish to see it as a handicap or embarrassment; oxygen liberates someone who has trouble breathing. Without it, they would be more tired or would be incapable of brisk exercise. While it means packing around a few extra pounds, portable oxygen is in fact a ticket to getting your life back.</p>
<p>Developments in technology make the task easier. For anyone who consumes oxygen daily, there are small containers that easily fit on a belt or into a hip pouch or even backpack. These can be single use pressure tanks, or perhaps something that can be refilled from a larger tank. These lightweight conveniences might only contain enough oxygen for a few hours, but it allows the breather to move about unrestricted by something that needs its own wheels. Imagine being able to walk in the park, oxygen being barely visible and hardly an obstacle to the person out and enjoying the sunshine.</p>
<p>People who use oxygen are not necessarily too old to function; they just need help whenever trouble arises. Sometimes a customer only needs oxygen occasionally, such as a person suffering from asthma. They are otherwise capable and productive people, and there is no reason for them to underestimate themselves or be estimated. Finding ways to conveniently travel with oxygen is about liberation in a condition that need not be restraining.</p>
<p>Some people are strong enough to pack extra tanks in the trunk or in the back seat when moving about the Isle or Europe for a few days. For someone who is not so strong, having a lorry with a folding incline can help in no small way. For anyone who is especially needy, it pays to have a friend or relative travel with them. While being dependent on another is not the most ideal situation, it is often more enjoyable to travel with a companion. At any rate, an oxygen machine sometimes takes two people to lift, so help may be needed in any case.<span id="more-12"></span></p>
<p>New tools are always being devised, and it does not take too much ingenuity to have a set of oxygen tanks installed in a car owned by the breather. Several small tanks might be arranged under the seat, or perhaps behind the driver's seat. It would mean one less person could fit in the vehicle, but it would liberate the driver from moving oxygen by hand anytime they want to go somewhere.</p>

<p>Babies' necks can look ridiculously short. Some babies can rest their chins on their chests without even trying, which makes you wonder if some parts are missing. To determine whether or not your baby's neck is normal, all you have to do is see if it moves normally. Short necks that have some abnormality always have limited flexibility, whereas the normal newborn's neck can be turned 80 degrees to the right or left, can be bent 40 degrees toward either shoulder, and will allow the back of the head to be brought back until it touches the neck. If your baby's neck can do all that, it's normal; if it can't, X rays should be taken to see if all the vertebrae are formed normally. Normal short necks present problems only for the physician. They make it something of a challenge to carefully examine all parts of the neck.</p>
<p>TURNED OR TWISTED NECK (Toricollis)</p>
<p>Babies can be born with a wry neck for several reasons. At one time, the twist was thought to result from the sort of difficult delivery that involves a great deal of pulling and tugging on the neck. We now know that injury to the baby's neck is just as apt to occur before delivery as during it. The injured part of the baby's neck is always the large muscle responsible for turning her head to the side, the sternocleidomastoid (SCM). Whether the SCM is injured by tearing or pressure, it heals by scarring, and as the scar contracts, the muscle shortens. As a result of this shortening, the baby's head can't turn toward the injured side or bend away from it. Her head is tilted toward the bad side and the chin is rotated toward the good side. She looks as if she were trying to face the sun coming over her shoulder.</p>
<p>If you feel the injured muscle right after birth, it will usually be tighter than the opposite one. Sometimes when the baby is about two weeks old, a walnut-sized swelling will appear in the middle of the injured SCM. This is scarred muscle and represents the healing phase of the injury. This swelling is commonly referred to as a tumor, bur when a baby has torticollis, it isn't a worrisome growth and doesn't need to be biopsied.<span id="more-14"></span></p>
<p>Torticollis acquired while still in the womb is usually accompanied by one or more of the other features of crowding, such as oblique modeling of the head and face and distortion of the ears. Torticollis that results from trauma at delivery isn't accompanied by all these other features of being squeezed into too small a space.</p>
<p>The SCM "tumor" disappears in eight to ten weeks and, with gentle stretching and encouraging the baby to turn toward the affected side, most torticollis disappears by the time the baby is six months old. Releasing the tight muscle by surgical means generally isn't necessary, but if after several years stretching hasn't worked, you should consider surgery.</p>
